Chogyam Trungpa on pulling yourself “back from hell”

The newest quote shared via Carolyn Gimian and Ocean of Dharma:

“The seed of virtue is one of the five strengths that allow us to practice our bodhisattva discipline of helping others throughout our whole life.  In this case, virtue means that your body, speech, and mind are all dedicated to propagating bodhicitta, the heart of wakefulness, in yourself. You have tremendous yearning all the time, so you do not take a rest from your wakefulness. At that point, your neurosis about individual freedom and human rights might come up. You might begin to think, ‘I have a right to do anything I want, and I want to dive to the bottom of hell. I like it there.’ That kind of reaction could happen. But you should pull yourself back up from the bottom of hell — for your own sake. You should realize that you cannot give in to the little claustrophobia of your own sanity.”–condensed from Training the Mind and Cultivating Loving Kindness, Shambhala Publications.
