Many were skeptical when this news broke in late January via the TimesOnline: “Burma’s military government is contemplating the release of the country’s democracy leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, at the end of the year, but only after the anticipated date of national elections, according to reports from Rangoon.”
And with good reason: the Burmese junta is quite skilled at saying one thing and doing another. To wit: Myanmar’s Supreme Court today rejected an appeal to overturn Aung San Suu Kyi’s house arrest.
Granted, this is February, not November, but this is not a step in the right direction.
As the TimesOnline wrote about the possibility of Aung San Suu Kyi’s release a month ago, “Supporters are unconvinced. They say they will be ordering the flying pigs.” On the other hand, as CNN reports, “Suu Kyi, 64, has one final avenue for appeal to a special court in Myanmar’s new capital, Naypidaw.”
In the meantime, we can hope. And stay informed and spread the word.
Wow that would be huge news if it ended up happening. Thanks for the update.
