A 29-year-old monk has become the latest Tibetan to self-immolate in protest of China’s occupation of Tibet. Lobsang Gendun set himself on fire Monday evening in Golog Pema Dzong, eastern Tibet. Gendun, who was a monk at the Penag Kadak Troedreling Monastery, reportedly clasped his hands in prayer and shouted slogans calling for Tibet’s independence. He died in the street at the scene of his protest, and his body was brought back to his monastery. He is survived by his parents and 11 siblings.
On Sunday, a 17-year-old was injured after self-immolating elsewhere in eastern Tibet.
Phayul reports that Sungdue Kyab carried out his protest on the main street of the town of Bora, near the Bora Monastery. Chinese police doused the flames and carried him away, allegedly to a hospital. According to Voice of America, Kyab appeared to be alive but seriously injured when police took him.
Ninety-two Tibetans have self-immolated since the wave of protests started in 2009, with at least 77 of them dying.
